EndNote 13FD2 Error during installation: 'Key not valid for use in specified state' This error message is not directly related to EndNote, as it has been known to affect a variety of bespoke programs during installation. The issue appears to be with various system files held in the following location: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\[folder name] There is likely to be only one file within the folder that is causing the problem, so there is both a workaround (for a quick fix), and a solution (for a permanent resolution). Workaround 1. Create a temporary folder on your desktop. 2. Go to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\ and cut the folder that you find there. 3. Paste the folder into the temporary folder on your desktop. 4. Restart the affected installation. It should now complete. 5. Cut the folder from your temporary desktop folder and paste it back into C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\. Solution The actual solution to this issue is to test each file individually to determine which file is corrupt. 1. Create a temporary folder on your desktop. 2. Go to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\ and go into the folder(s) that you see there. 3. One by one, cut a file from the folder and paste it into your temporary folder on the desktop. 4. If the installation still fails, replace the file to its original location and repeat step 3 for the next file down. 5. Once the installation completes you have found the corrupt file, and it can be deleted. The file should automatically recreate itself when required.
